Parents often ask me what they can do to help their children become better students. My answer is always, "READ, READ, READ!" This includes reading to your children, taking turns reading each page, having them read aloud to you, allotting time for them to read independently, allowing them to listen to books on CD, and reading ebooks. I also am frequently asked about the types of books that are appropriate for reading. It is important to remember that any kind of reading is beneficial. This includes comic books, magazines, ebooks, etc. While reading alone, students should be reading books at their independent level (as determined from DRA testing and classroom performance), but they can still enjoy text above their level with help from an adult or listening to it read aloud from an electronic device. Improved reading attributes to academic advances in all subject areas so please encourage your child to read as much as possible. For reluctant readers, e-books are a wonderful option and trips to the library also help increase motivation. If you need assistance selecting books, please don't hesitate to ask.
